Small animal? We had a squirrel get stuck in a pillar outside the front door. We think it got out.

We'll try the water first then check the vent.

If a roof vent was clogged enough to prevent the escape of gas, I think you'd be seeing additional issues outside of just that one sink, mainly slow drainage.

You hit a couple buzz words. Sink that is infrequently used. Almost certainly a dried up P-Trap

^^Agree. You need to run water in the sink occasionally or the water in the P Trap will dry up and let the sewer smell in.

interestingly, I just made a mental note this morning to develop a schedule to run water (to fill the P-trap) in our less-used drains. I'm thinking monthly or bi-weekly would be enough?

Monthly would do it.
Heck, quarterly would probably do it.

You might put the stopper down to keep snakes out, too.

As Mike said, it doesn’t have to be all that regular. My parents had it happen in a shower in their place in MA…like a year after we moved in (we had one bathroom in the house in Cincy….upgrading to two took some getting used to (in terms of utilization)

Agree with all of this. We now run water to fill the p-traps once a month for an infrequently used bathroom and have not had the problem since.

We have a sink in one of the bathrooms that’s never used because my wife keeps a jigsaw puzzle going over it all the time. She does roughly a puzzle a week, so when she’s done she runs a little hot and cold water down the drain just to keep things going. I also keep a plastic wash pan under under all pea traps throughout the house just in case one starts to leak. I check them periodically….and BTW, no clutter underneath sinks. P.W. Rule

FWIW, there are some decent water leak detectors you can buy in a 2, 6, and sometimes 8 pack on Amazon that will alarm if anything drops on or under them. There's even a system that allows them to be linked to a central status display unit. I bought a 6 pack after a quiet water leak and keep them behind the washer, sinks, toilets, water heater, etc. They're not too expensive considering what it cost me to repair a ceiling recently.
