Is it just me or is Big Mikes not as good as it used to be? It used to be one of my favorite spots but I think I prefer other BBQ spots now.
I’ve never had good experiences there. I’ve had the pulled pork three different times, and every time it’s been dry as can be. I did like their wings.
We’ve had Daddy D’s in FV a few times and it’s decent. The Brunswick Stew is very good.
Bullock's in Durham is the place to go. Can't comment on the BBQ (never had it), but everything else on the menu reeks of Southern comfort food. And it's fairly close to the Duke Campus. Cash only, I think. No point in ordering ribs or brisket in NC, those are from places far away from NC.
Sounds like things have changed at Backyard Barbecue since we’ve moved. It was never dirty when I was there and the food was always good. Oh well, don’t think I’ll be recommending it anymore.
Bullock's in Durham has been around since the beginning of time and is close to Duke. I doubt they have brisket. If brisket is a must, either Q-shack in Durham or Hillsborough BBQ in Hillsborough.
This is your spot if you are going to a Duke game. They do have beef brisket, but make sure you also get some pork (chopped is my preference). Combo #12 should get you both. Note they are closed on Sundays.
Barbecue in North Carolina is ONLY pork. In the eastern part of the state it is whole hog, ideally cooked over wood, but many places have moved to gas now. In Lexington and west of there it is pork shoulder.
It is never brisket and ribs.
There are plenty of places that will serve that to cater to folks from other areas, but that's like going to NYC and ordering a biscuit instead of a bagel.
I'd recommend Bullocks, and the Original Q Shack, if you want to stay in Durham. Best bbq is from hole in the wall places out in the country or small towns.
The Pig in Chapel Hill is more hipstery, but they do some good Eastern style bbq, too. Just don't order the brisket or the tempeh if you want classic Southern food https://thepigrestaurant.com, although I have heard the tempeh is very good.

Hence my recommendation for the #12 at Bullocks — you get the best of both worlds.
Does anyone think Moe's Original is good? They are near the Duke stadium and have both ribs and pulled pork. (Woops they are a chain restaurant serving Alabama-style barbeque.)
