Hope all involved in the accident are okay. You can ask your insurance agent about the charge. They may cover it or get the other insurer to cover it if the accident was not your fault. They might not cover it but no harm asking.
I got my car towed about 1.5 miles for $125 when I just called a company and asked for a tow. This was last year. I am sure the price can fluctuation depending how damaged your car is and how much of a pain the job is.
When you let the gov't take control and make the decisions for you price isn't their concern. :-D Maybe the price is some special high rate to get the road cleared as fast as possible
I'm not sure if this is what happened here, but if the call goes out on the radio for a wrecker, ie you have an accident and the police request a wrecker, the prices are much higher. We had an incident about 15 years ago where our car had to be pulled out of a ditch. The operator said it would have been $40 if we called him, but since it went out on the radio as a wreck he had to charge us $150.

When my daughter was in a wreck last spring, the apex policeman called a tow truck (I wasnt there to override the decision) as I think it was just part of their process. Tow fee was ~$150 to take the vehicle ~7 miles, then another $100-150 for storage fees. If I had been there, I would have driven the vehicle the 4 miles home to deal with it. From the officer's perspective, they are probably used to insurance paying for everything, so dont care whether it costs $50 or $500 - just want to get the scene processed.
Cops loooooove to tell people "your insurance will handle it" - problem is cops have no idea what kind of coverage you (or the other party) have. Cops in NC, across the board, do not care if someone is uninsured. They just let them go.

How does that happen? Like that's fake state level nonsense (and yes, everyone, I realize driving uninsured happens everywhere, but cops literally turning them loose after the fact....not so much)
