While I agree generally, the apartment complexes in west Cary say otherwise. Just drive by one around bud pickup time.

I wonder if the troublesome Motel 8 next to South Hills Mall will be impacted by these renovations

The Motel 6 is not included in the rezoning/PDP application (nor is the auto sales thing next door). Everything else on that side of Buck Jones is involved though, including Grace Christian. And several parcels they’ve acquired across Buck Jones.

While the Motel 6 isn’t directly a part of this, you have to imagine there will be redevelopment pressure on it. That property will certainly become more valuable.

The preliminary site plans say there will be up to 1,775 multifamily units, up to 935,000 square feet of office and public/institution space, up to 235,000 square feet of research lab space, up to 550,000 square feet of retail space, up to 350 hotel rooms and 500,000 square feet of sports and recreational space. [...]

Henry Ward, a partner at Loden Properties, said the updated site will be split into walkable sections to create a unique destination. Each section – Ward referred to them as "blocks" – won’t exceed 120,000 square feet, and the maximum average size will be 60,000 square feet. The blocks will be completed in phases with each opening to the public as they are completed.

The blocks will be split into three different height zones — with maximum heights of 72 feet, 180 feet and 280 feet.
The project will be built in phases over 10–15 years, hoping to start work in 2024 with the first openings coming in late 2027 or early 2028. Leases for existing tenants will be honored and they want to retain them as it's redeveloped.

I'd be all in favor of them keeping tenants, but I’m guessing the rent will be significantly different and out of reach of all those places.

Looks like there's some movement on this property redevelopment. South Hills Demolition coming 2024?
From reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/raleigh/com...sad_theyll_be/
Bakers Dozen, the amazing donut place, is telling customers they have to get out by the end of 2024 since demolition is on the way. Here's what WRAL had in 2022 for renderings, also from Reddit. Since that WRAL, the town of Cary got $75 million of funding set aside for it by Wake County to go towards the several hundred millions needed to build the sports complex, likely via a bond referendum.

Mayor Weinbrecht and a bunch of others from the town traveled to Kansas City last week to meet with the architecture firm in charge of the sports center project. But yes, it will require a bond at some point, perhaps this fall.

If that’s the case then what’s going to,happen to Grand Asia? There’s not enough time to do the rumored HT to Western, then they move to the old HT shuffle.

No idea what the full timeline is, as there may be phasing involved. The main building with Grand Asia in it where the sports center is supposed to go, and that may yet be some time off.

The Baker's Dozen building is part of the private development area, and that phase may move a bit quicker.

Did hear somewhere that the HT to Kmart building move is canceled, but not sure if that's the case, or if so, what that means.

I wouldn’t be surprised. I drove by there earlier and there’s a leasing sign out front that I don’t remember.
