As I was out cycling today, I came to the corner of Leadmine and Glenwood and noticed an older man with sign that read "Homeless and Hungry". As we were stopped at the light a car that is making a right hand turn stops and a little gal jumps out of her car. At first I wasn't sure what she was going to do. She opens the back window of her Ford Explorer and pulls out a plastic food carry out container - says something to the homeless man and begins opening containers she has in the back fo her car. She then starts to dish up corn, beans and by then the light changed and I wasn't able to see the conclusion.
I looked behind me and everyone could not believe this exchange . . it was very humbling as it is easy to pass judgement on people but I felt honored to witness something very special happen right in front of my eyes.
If that is deemed an incredible act of kindness, this is a sad world we live in. I thought someone had given a kidney to a stranger or something. Now that would be deemed an incredible act of kindness in my book.
I am sure the homeless guy cursed her, said he really wanted some liquor and threw her food on the ground. I hate to sound jaded but that is my experience with homeless/"down on their luck" people in the area. I hope I am wrong though.
I just drive by, but thats because I've seen more than one panhandler park their car in a nearby lot and go stand in the intersection asking for money. One person brought a wheelchair with him so he could sit while he was out at the intersection, but he hopped up to get money.
I prefer to give money to charitable organizations and ensure the money is spent on food, clothing, housing, etc. as opposed to drugs or alcohol. A lot of people play the homeless and in need card that are actually just panhandlers out to live off others' charity.
Wow, I cannot believe a couple of the thoughts on this already. Pretty sad.
I think that was an awfully nice thing for that girl to do and if the world had more people who thought of others, instead of themselves, it would be a better place.
Thank you for letting us know what you saw. It should be inspiration to us all to do the little things in life that mean so much to others.
Who should judge the road that someone else is walking? No matter the reason, if you are begging for food or money, you are in a desperate place. We need to show compassion to others. I think it was a great act of kindness for that woman to feed someone in need.

This wasn't about giving money, it was about giving food. That's something I can get behind.
I see things like the CEO of the American Red Cross getting paid over $600k annually and it disheartens me to think of how many well-meaning donations were used to fatten an execs pockets.
Even if he wanted booze or crack, it was great for her to care.
I agree, he's still gotta eat. I think that was a lovely thing to do!
