I've never seen anyone mention anything about NW Durham (i.e. the American Village/Duke Forest area). It seems to be the forgotten corner of the city...What can you tell me about it? (culture, safety, demographics, etc.). I'm a 22 yr old student if that helps give a reference point. Thanks!
It's beautiful. We have friends in American Village, and the lots are big with lots of trees. Nice neighborhood there. It is also convenient to Duke Forest, for long walks with kids and dogs.
Wow..quick response! I'll actually be living in Deerfield apts--I don't know if that's technically American Village. Why do you think the area is so under-talked about?

It's not really a "growth area" the same way that SW Durham, Apex, Western Cary, HS, FV, Clayton are. Same reason that the ITB communities in Raleigh aren't really talked about here, though obviously not to that same extent. Growth areas are the ones that get the most press...
Excellent question. I've spent my 8 yrs living in Durham in this area, which I usually just refer to as West Durham. I spent the first 3 yrs in the apts across from Deerfield and still live in that general section of town. It's so close to Duke, and it is very convenient to everything- I85, Durham Freeway, Downtown, and a straight shot to Chapel Hill- especially using Old Erwin to avoid 15/501. I think there's a tendency (as I'm sure you've seen on these forums) for people to direct newcomers straight to SW Durham. Folks don't take the time to realize that there are some great places elsewhere!

I think it's simply because we don't have many members of this forum who live there (and those who do post very rarely).
People tend to talk about the areas they know the best & the areas they know the best are obviously going to be the areas where they already live. We have a ton of active members of this forum who live in southern Durham, so it gets talked about more frequently.

We lived in Deerfield Apartments when we first moved to Durham (1999-2001). It was a great place to live.
I live in a neighborhood bordering the forest, a mile or so from American Village. I couldn't imagine a better neighborhood in the Triangle than mine. It's safe, super quiet, with big lots, lots of trees, great neighbors and 3-4 minutes to 15-501, 147, or I-85. The biggest problem any of us have is that the deer from Duke Forest play all over our neighborhood in the evenings and at night.
