Yay! We are excited! We've made the decision to move to the area. We're looking at sometime in either late May or early August and have targeted the Chapel Hill area. We want to rent a 3br house for a while before we decide on where to buy. How far in advance do I need to make a rental hunting trip before the actual move date? Will we be competing with students if we choose to move there in August? Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Unless you're targeting the type of homes that students rarely rent, yeah, I 'd recommend avoiding August. May/June would be great cuz they'll be getting away.

Are you saying that we should make the move in June or visit in June to find a rental starting in August?

I'm saying in August many rentals will be gobbled up by students. So at least have one reserved before hand if possible.
