Some big patches of grass in my area have turned brown over the last few weeks. Is this bermuda grass that's gone into its brown winter phase, or is something else at work?

As you can tell, my knowledge of suburban grasses is negligible. And I know bermuda grass is supposed to turn brown in the winterish months, but I didn't know it'd turn this early.

It could be several things, but my guess is that it's crabgrass starting to go dormant. I haven't seen any bermuda starting to turn yet.

I was going to say crabgrass too. I had a bad infestation of it this year and it's finally dying leaving large brown patches.

Cary Native: I was told that crabgrass actually dies, doesn't go dormant, but is spread by it's seeds the next year as an annual. I'm really no expert, but that's what I was told and have read.

Sounds exactly right. My Bermuda grass is still deep green and growing.

Lamishra- You are correct, I'm not sure what I was thinking when I wrote that.

It more than likely is not diseased as it is really too cool for much disease pressure now.

Well, turns out that the biggest patch I saw was dug up and resodded, so it's not there to photograph anymore. If I find some others, though, I'll pass along some photos. Thanks all!
