You will likely get great input right here on CityData if you identify the areas, and ask about specific apartment communities.
As far as getting an agent goes, you might consider that if you want to rent a house or townhome, especially if the properties are listed on the MLS.
An agent can conveniently help you get into multiple properties that are marketed by multiple property managers.
When you find a property you want to try to rent, the agent can ask some questions for you and help you with any questions you may have, but will "hand you off" to the property manager to do the lease. In North Carolina, an agent cannot "represent" you as a tenant. We just do not have that specific function established legally.
