should I get an agent when looking for apartments? (Raleigh: real estate, renters)

Hello,

Since I will be moving down to NC in a few months, I was wondering whether or not to get a real estate agent to help me look for an apartment.

We have been down to the Raleigh area a few times to look at houses, but now we decided to rent and then buy.

We know the areas we want to live, but I don't know where there are apartments we might enjoy.

You will likely get great input right here on CityData if you identify the areas, and ask about specific apartment communities.

As far as getting an agent goes, you might consider that if you want to rent a house or townhome, especially if the properties are listed on the MLS.
An agent can conveniently help you get into multiple properties that are marketed by multiple property managers.

When you find a property you want to try to rent, the agent can ask some questions for you and help you with any questions you may have, but will "hand you off" to the property manager to do the lease. In North Carolina, an agent cannot "represent" you as a tenant. We just do not have that specific function established legally.

No need for a broker, and most probably won't want to waste time on an apt search.

Depending on where you'll be working there are sme great apartments in the Brier Creek area, and close to everything. You can also look on Craigslist for a rental in the area. Agents don't get much for rentals even though I have done it many times. I personally don't mind, and have made some great friends that started out as renters in the area, and then have now made that home purchase. Some apartments give agents bonus and some even 1/2 the first months rent but not many anymore. It seems like everyone is cutting back. Where will you be working and how far do you want to drive?
