I know there are some other breakfast posts, but none really deal with ambience/surroundings. I went to Brig's in Cary for the first time today because it was so highly rated.... it was busy and the food was OK, but I don't see what all the fuss is about. The decor was, well, sorely lacking. Just a strip mall coffee shop place that could use a paint brush and some updating.

Now, I know there will be plenty of people who will say what does it matter? It's the food that counts. Well, that true to an extent.... but atmosphere is also important. It plays a close second in the whole enjoyment of the experience. Sooooo, can anyone recommend some places where the two go hand in hand? Anywhere in Cary, Chapel Hill, downtown Raleigh? THANKS.

I like Cindy's House in downtown Cary and think it has a nice-ish ambience.

Nice atmosphere? HA! Try Gateway Restaurant's breakfast one time. It is so good that everything around you will be stunningly beautiful.

I've been to the Briggs over here in Durham and I agree with you. The food is OK, but I don't understand why people were bragging about it. The atmosphere is meh.

I haven't been to many breakfast places in this area, excluding Cracker Barrel and Briggs, but you may want to try Elmo's Diner in either Durham or the one in Chapel Hill. I've been to both for lunch and the atmosphere is better than Briggs (think diner like). I haven't had breakfast at Elmos but people I've spoken with say that it's good. I'm going to try it out for breakfast in the next couple of weeks.

Big Ed's in City Market is another good spot. The only downside to them is they are not open on Sundays.

You'll have to qualify what you mean by good ambiance. Are you looking for something upscale, white-tablecloth? Are you looking for live music or pianist? Is this a regular daily thing or is this for a special occasion? Is this during the week or are you looking for a Sunday brunch buffet spread? Is this for entertaining clients or a treat for you and a significant other? Or breakfast for the whole family? What's the price range you're looking at?

I know you didn't ask for Durham, but it might be worth a special trip to go to Guglhupf. I haven't been to the cafe, just the bakery...but it's got a lovely patio and is really popular on weekends:
