My license expires this month, can anyone tell me if I need to give a test to renew it? I want to be prepared.

Thanks,

D

I think just the vision test where they show you the signs. Unless you let your license lapse, you don't have to take the written test to renew.

yeah, under normal circumstances, it's the road signs test which is not always as easy as you think it will be.
Get there 10 minutes early and look at the road signs part of the manual or look at them online. It's hard to explain until you've taken it, but they are looking for very specific answers. I'm a native and have been driving here for a LONG time and I still get stumped on at least one or two of those stupid signs!

My husband renewed his license today. Just before he left I reminded him of the "No Passing Zone" sign which looks like a sideways yellow triangle. It's always on the test, and I'm not sure I've seen one anywhere but on the test. When he came back he said it was good that I reminded him....

BTW for folks in Cary, I didn't realize the testing office had moved from the train station on Academy Street to a strip mall near Maynard & Chatham.

From the NC DOT DMV website:

"The vision and traffic sign recognition tests are always required for a license renewal. The road test requirement is at the discretion of the Examiner. No driving skills test will be initiated after 4:00pm."
