Shortly before 7 p.m., the driver of an Isuzu missed his exit onto Wade Avenue from I-40 East, so he then cut across multiple lanes to try to get onto the exit ramp, state troopers said.

The Isuzu clipped a tractor-trailer and then went off the road into the treeline. The Isuzu came back into eastbound lanes and hit a minivan, tossing it into a garbage truck.

The garbage truck driver lost control of his vehicle, which crossed the center median and hit a Dodge Charger in the westbound lanes, troopers said. The garbage truck ran off the road and overturned, spilling refuse across the road.

The truck caught on fire, and flames spread to the debris on the highway and in the woods.

A witness told WRAL News that the truck driver was on fire when the witness pulled him out of the truck. Troopers said the garbage-truck driver suffered serious burns.

Holy crud.

Default Whoa!

Why didn't the Isuzu driver just take the next exit and turn around? I guess we'll never know. It's not worth people losing their lives over!

My husband and I both drive that stretch of road pretty regularly, and that maneuver is unfortunately very common. It's a shame, and a shame so many people were hurt.

I NEVER try to make it at the last second if I am about to miss an exit or a turn. Like you say, it's just not worth the potential consequences. I hope they prosecute and serve harsh penalty on the Isuzu driver. How someone can be so reckless over something like a missed exit and cause such grave injury to others is beyond my ability to comprehend.

OMG! Someone makes a stupid decision and some other innocent person pays the price. I pray for the hurt truck driver - I sincerely hope he recovers.

WRAL is reporting three people were transported to the hospital, but their status isn't known.

I do too. Coming from Harrison I never leave the right lane to get onto Wade Ave. But I know it's a heavily traveled exit as it actually has two lanes to travel onto it.
