Nags head and Hatteras are about a 4 hour drive
a little long for a day trip

And heck Hatteras is a bout an hour from Nags head

But great for a weeks stay...

I find this rather amusing, as I think Emerald Isle is one of the MOST "touristy" beaches in the state! Hwy 58 in the summer is some pretty scary traffic!

I do think the FAR Southern beaches tend to be less crowded, but they are a farther drive (Ocean Isle, etc, almost on the SC border).

We really love Emerald Isle. The beach is clean and very family friendly. Parking isn't that bad either. We just moved from that area and miss it horribly
