My husband and I plan to move to the Chapel Hill area from Washington, DC this summer. We really like the Carrboro area but I'm wondering about the feasibility of commuting from Carrboro to other areas around the Triangle. Particularly, would it be a nightmare to commute from Carrboro to the Research Triangle Park on a daily basis? What is traffic like?
That's a very easy commute to RTP. Under 30 minutes. From south/west Carrboro, you'll hit traffic on secondary roads heading from Carrboro to I-40. From north (e.g., Homestead Road) it will be easier.
My wife makes the commute everyday from Southern Village in CH to RTP and usually under 30 minutes -- number of different options to get to RTP, and depending on where in RTP, can be plus/minus 5 minutes. I go to the airport about twice a week, and in the early AM, can get there in under 25 minutes. Hope this helps
It's easy enough, but it will annoy you at times, especially along 15/501/54 near the Manning Rd and St. Thomas More church lights, as well as a large chunk of 54 up to the interstate. The traffic itself isn't bad, but the lights can really eat into one's commute time if they're not time right (which they can't be!).
On the whole, it will be a breeze from what you're likely used to in the DC metro, though.
The drive from Chapel Hill is congested and will only get worse over the years. I would really check out the North Raleigh area. Try and find a place not far from 540 and then you have an easy highway commute to RTP. It is also a bonus when we get snow, since I-540 and I-40 get cleared first.
