My guess is that you might have good success getting a variance to attend a more local school, you might have to provide your own transportation, though. I'd contact the school syste directly and ask them their thoughts.

An hour???!!! Is that for real? The county really thinks it's ok to make kids sit on a bus for an hour before school, and an hour after school, on top of a full day of school?!? IMO, that's just plain insane. No wonder kids are jumping around on the bus like crazed monkies every time I pass by a school bus - heck, I'd be doing the same thing. Not to mention the complete waste of time it is, spending 2 hours a day on a bus.

It's ironic that so many adults complain about an hour-long commute to work, but they apparently have no problem making their kids do it.

Does anyone know how often they grant these variances? Do you have to prove some kind of hardship circumstance, or is it ok to just say you want your kid to attend x school? I'll contact the school system directly - just curious if anyone here has any experience or info.

To

Durham county has longer commutes for some students....and we volenterily have an hour and a half bus ride to go to a magnet school.

To be honest, I don't get the drama. Smaller rural areas typicallyhave bus rides like that and have for decades. I had a 55 mintues ride in the 70s.) Also, not all bus rides are that long here. When my daughter was in elementary, we had a 20 mintue ride.

Most kids, if they are serious students, use their time constructively. And I've never seen bad behavior on my daughter's bus...but that could just be our bus driver. She's great.
