My inlaws joined this one and are happy with it:

The UNC Wellness Center at Meadowmont

You needn't be affiliated with UNC to join, and it's just over the Durham/Chapel Hill line in Meadowmont down on 54. They really like it, and it's not like one of these fly by night places that will be closed in a few months. I think they did have to wait for a space to open, but they were joining in Spring and I think openings are more plentiful in summer. Don't know your age but I think it tends to cater to a more middle-aged/older crowd.

Try Fitness World in the Homestead Market Shopping Plaza on Hwy 54. They seem to have plenty of free weights. The age range varies from teens to seniors.

I echo durhammom. Fitness World in the Homestead Market Shopping Plaza is where my husband and I are members. It's across 40 from Southpoint. They have a true free weight area that houses almost anything you'd need and a separate weight machine area. Also lots of cardio machines, fitness classes, and a small basketball court.

If you want further information, send me a direct message. We should be able to get you a free guest pass to check out the facilities.

I have heard wonderful things about the UNC center at Meadowmont. It'd be a short drive from Southpoint.
