My wife suffers from migraines and has for a long time. Seeking recommendations for migraine specialists in the Triangle, especially if you've had good results with them yourself.

Would you consider a natural health type doctor? My wife has a thyroid issue and they were going to put her on drugs. She went to a natural health doctor who narrowed it down to being her diet. We changed her diet and poof problem solved.

I'm not sure if migraines are driven by diet but it might be worth a shot.

Well, she's been to a local headache clinic for at least 3 years and has been prescribed a whole lot of different medications - end result, still has migraines, so I'm open-minded about looking at other options.

This is the doctor my wife goes to:

The Naturopathic Center
Dr. Jennifer Kaumeyer
8440 Six Forks Road, Suite 201
Raleigh, NC 27615
PH. 480-206-9548
Fax 919-848-0211

I know it sounds hokey. Trust me I am skeptical too. However here is my story. I was having really odd headaches for months. After going to a neurologist he diagnosed me with atypical migraines and prescribed career ending anti-seizure medication.

At the urging of my unions' doctor I got another opinion. I went to another neurologist whom, after looking over my paperwork and MRI results rightly concluded I had a pinched nerve. 3 days of R&R, alternating hot and cold packs on my neck, and lots of tea my headaches are but a distant memory. Come to find out later that this new neurologist specialized in natural cures and acupuncture.

Had it not been for that second opinion and natural "fix" I'd be hopped up on drugs and out of my career that I spent upwards of $80k on getting certified for and countless years of my life on. The anti-seizure medication would have "fixed" my headaches however it would not have cured the underlying problem.

I am not against taking medicine or seeing "real" doctors. However after my experience and my wife's we are now taking the natural type approach BEFORE taking drugs. I'm not saying this will fix her but it might.

P.S. No I'm not a hippie.

My mom has gone to a headache clinic in greensboro since last year. She lives in the triangle, but went there because of their reputation. It is not an easy course of treatment! They wanted her completely off of pain meds (as in advil, aleve, etc) and they put her on meds for migranes. She also got shots in her head/neck that are suppose to last 6 months. She was pleased with them.

She did recently find out though that she has a thyroid issue and that could be contributing to the headaches.

This is what I am talking about. Chances are they will probably just put her on thyroid medicine instead of investigating why she has a thyroid issue. She might benefit from a change in diet. That in turn could fix her thyroid issue which would stop the migraines. Yet all we do here in the US is prescribe drugs. OK enough ranting.

My mom ended up with hyperthyroid issue which caused her calcium levels to be very high, along with that she found out that she is gluten intolerant. Both of those can cause headaches. So, she is actually having surgery at duke on Monday to remove the one thyroid gland that is causing problems. This headache issue has been a year long mission of discovery, for sure. She also sees an acupuncturist who is the person that encouraged her to look into the gluten issue. The thyroid, well, that just happened because when she had a regular blood test her calcium levels were very high.

There are many things to look into when having headaches!

I hope the surgery goes well!

My wife is on a diet with severely reduced sugar, dairly, and white flour. Her TSH levels have returned to normal without taking any drugs. She has Hashimoto's disease, which is causing the hyperthyroidism.

Quote:
Hashimoto's disease is a disorder that affects your thyroid, a small gland located at the base of your neck, below your Adam's apple. The thyroid gland is part of your endocrine system, which produces hormones that coordinate many of your body's activities.

In Hashimoto's disease, also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, your immune system attacks your thyroid gland. The resulting inflammation often leads to an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism). Hashimoto's disease is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States.

Doctors test your thyroid function to help detect Hashimoto's disease. Treatment of Hashimoto's disease with thyroid hormone replacement usually is simple and effective.

Thanks for the info - I looked up their website (Naturalhealthcareofnc.com) and I'll pass it on to my wife.
