Will there be plenty of bars and restaurants? lounges? Clubs? Will the establishments be centrally located and walkable? Will it be like Glenwood South?

This question is similar to "How will my 401k portfolio be doing 5 years from now?"

Why do you say no? I think in the short time I've been here, it's already gotten better. I hope it continues, I've always thought it had a great potential for some cool funky shops and great bars or cafes. I'm very much hoping YES

It's come such a long way in just the last five years and although the economy has taken a hit I can see so much more in the next five years. There are already so many great restaurants, lounges, and bars. They just aren't all centrally located. I would love to see more shops and can see that happening too.

I'll give Durham some credit on this one: Where will it be in 5 years? Hopefully the high rate of muggings, robberies, and murders will just stay the same.

How is this relevant at all to the OP's question? He was asking about bars and restaurants, not the crime rate. Do you just look for threads with the word "Durham" so you can post irrelevant responses about its crime rate?

I agree with you completely dlj02000 it's as if some (or even many) have to continuously bring up crime whenever Durham is mentioned. Its aggravating, but I see it as something that people are ignorant too and only want to continue to perpetuate the same (not surprising, seemingly people in this area love the same). Bullcityrising has a great article about realtors in the triangle and how some continue to "steer" people towards the more safe areas of the triangle (specifically Wake County), sadly enough its not only realtors but residents alike. So sad, I was always told if you have nothing nice to say or even add to a conversation DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL.

On a happier note, I do think Durham will have an even greater nightlife in the next 5 years. Look at all the places that have popped up recently. At least 4 to 5 more places I can think of will be open before the end of 2009 (thats great in this economy). Maybe not glenwood south, but hey ill dig anything walkable

I really hope it gets better. When I moved to the Bull City back in '05 I was disappointed at the lack of nightlife. There are, of course, some really cool bars and pubs around Duke U. area, but I have to admit that Fayetteville (where I moved from) even has better nightclubs than Durham. I used to venture with some friends down to Glenwood area in Raleigh, but got tired of the drive back (to North Durham!)and worrying about getting a DWI. Guess karaoke night at the Ale House will have to suffice for now.
