Decent shopping can be found at Cameron Village, which is one mile south of Glenwood Ave. on Peace St.
Cameron Village is less than one mile West (not south) of Glenwood Ave. via Peace St. Since Glenwood arcs, it's South of Glenwood via Oberlin but probably a bit more than a mile at that point.
If you head to the World Beer Festival in Durham - note that it is the "old" Durham ballpark (Foster St) - not the new one at the American Tobacco Complex. We were at ATC last year on the night of the Beer Festival and could have sold maps to the old ballpark.

Last years beer festival was at the new ballpark as the old one was getting construction done. This years is back at the original park.
I'm 23. I can vouch for Franklin St. in Chapel Hill. East End can be a fun spot. 50 cent beers.. beer pong.. etc. Raleigh's got some good places too... the ones mentioned above do the trick.
Another area for shopping and dinner/drinks would be North Hills. If you're looking for a bar/club scene hit Chapel Hill or Glenwood South. But for shopping and dinner North Hills is cute. I second Cameron Village as well. Have fun!
If you're here on Thursday night still check out Red Room. They have good food/drink specials and free salsa dancing lessons
