I'm from the Northeast (Boston). Thinking about moving to Cary/Raleigh-ish area. I've heard from different people that Cary unofficialy stands for concentrated area of relocated yankees. Due to how many of us are down there? Is there any truth to this....that would be awesome!!! Not that I have any problems with southerners but sometimes they can't understand what I'm saying which gets very annoying, especially since I understand them perfectly. Any info would be cool, thanks.

The acronym is, of course, a joke, but yes, there are many people from elsewhere now living in Cary. But that doesn't mean they'll understand you. There are people from all over the country and from all over the world, and no matter where anyone is from, everyone has an accent of some kind.

Way to make a first impression...claiming to be annoyed by the natives of the area in which you wish to live.

The whole Triangle has a relatively high percentage of northerners. All the growth here has to be driven by something, and a fair portion of it is northerners looking for a better climate. Cary in particular has a reputation for it, in part due to its proximity to RTP, which draws a lot of talent from tech/biotech-heavy areas in the northeast and west.

Yes, the whole Triangle area is full of transplants. But there are still a lot of Southerners that may have a hard time understanding you. This is still the South, so don't ecpect to find things down here the way they are up in Boston.

We're from Boston too, and have been here since 2005. I personally have a harder time understanding my neighbors from Long Island than I do the locals. I work with a bunch of born and raised NCers and they are the dearest folks I ever met. We made many friends real fast. Much harder cracking the ice of fellow transplants sometimes.

Cary is loaded with transplants from the Northeast. We have neighbors from Methuen, Waltham, Quincy and Hopkinton. We are from Norwood/Newton/Wayland.

There is no kind of culture shock that your imagination may present you with. Come on down. Almost everything available there is here too. Except our beloved Sox and Pats, and there are several fan groups that meet up here.

We are not going to move back to Mass. Ever. Good luck!

From Providence here....went to school/grad school in Boston. We've been here for 18 months and love it more every day. Would NEVER go back.

As for Northerners who comwe down here and complain - I just don't get it!! There is NOTHING to complain about!

You are correct about the acronym and about Cary's particularly high ratio of Northern transplants. By now, other places in the SW part of the county, such as Apex and Holly Springs, and Clayton in Johnston County to the South, are taking on that same "Cary" demographic (floods of Northerners), but Cary is the biggest and most central of the local suburban areas. Where will you be working? Definitely recommended to come with a job already; unemployment is grim here, not exactly helped by so many moving in (100 people a day!) all competing in the same market.

You will need to remember that YOU are the one who has the 'accent', here, that's all But those of us who grew up in the Triangle are accustomed to hearing every regional accent in the book, so the natives have heard it all and will be fine with you as long as you aren't patronizing or complain about things not being done "the way they did it up north".

Cary is definitely the "Collection Area of Relocated Yankees" I moved to Cary from DC, my wife is from Mass, and where we live 75% of our neighbors relocated from either NJ, NY, MA or Connecticut. It is southern living is a northern flair. We love it and have convinced hers parents, die hard Pats and Bosox fans, to move here as well. Come join the fun.
