Those of you who grew up here will surely be familiar with builder Edd K. Roberts, who was responsible for thousands of houses in North Raleigh (and throughout the area), going back to the 1960s. There was a time when you would see his signs almost everywhere you went. He passed away this past week at the age of 71. He was certainly a Raleigh legend.
Francois - nteresting you should mention him. His name jumped out at me on the N&O obits page. At first I thought the name sounded familiar, and then I read his obit and started to recall that he was pretty big time around here for sometime. I moved here in '74 and remember seeing his name on lots of properties. Did he have anything to do with the old North Hills? maybe I am not remember this correctly? I was surprised at his age, I somehow thought he'd be older.

You're thinking of Ed Richards who did North Hills and its surrounding subdivisions (and started "North Raleigh", back when it was nothing but those neighborhoods right around North Hills). But Edd K Roberts was definitely a contemporary of Richards. It just occurred to me tonight that every house I've ever lived in, in Raleigh, was done by Edd K. I remember meeting him when I was about 5, and he'd have been about 30. I think he was still living in the house in North Ridge that his kids grew up in. My partner is in real estate, so was very closely acquainted with EKR. A big loss to the area.
Thanks Francois! Looks like I did get mixed up. Yes, I was thinking of the North Hills guy. I have a lot of respect for those who came before us and were so instrumental in shaping how Raleigh looks today, though we are fortunate now to have similar visionaries.

I, too, moved to Raleigh in 74 and remember seeing his signs everywhere. An entire subdivision near my home was built by his company. Even today, I can point out a Edd K Roberts home just by looking at it.
