Hi all,

We currently live in upstate NY and will be visiting Durham for a week in June so that my son can attend Duke basketball camp. While our son is busy in camp, my husband and I plan to explore the Durham/Triangle area. Any must see/must do things in the Triangle? Where can we get really good BBQ? I can't wait to sample some southern cooking, I'm kind of bored of pizza and wings. I know there's a minor league baseball team in Durham, so we'll probably check that out. Just wondering what people do for fun in your area.

I am so looking forward to this trip and any and all suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!!

For Carolina style BBQ, you have to check out Allen & Sons. It's on the northern edge of Chapel Hill. It certainly isn't a fancy place, but it's definitely one of the top BBQ joints around.

Edit: Looks like they don't have their own website (which really isn't a surprise ). Here's their listing on City Search.

Since you'll already be on campus - you should check out the Duke Gardens.

This is not in Durham, but close by in Chapel Hill: http://www.mamadips.com/ When you said southern cooking, that is what popped into my mind.

Duke Gardens, absolutely! The Duke campus in general is pretty around the Duke Chapel area, for walking.

There are lots of things to do, but I'm trying to think of things that would give you a good local or Southern flavor... you could stroll down 9th Street http://www.ninthst.com/ in Durham and grab a cup of coffee or tea at Bean Traders:

The Nasher is nice, maybe if you are not full of NY art museums:

If it's hot (it will be!) find Locopops: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locopops

Mmmm ... Locopos. The raspberry hibiscus is amazing!

While you're on the Duke campus, you should also check out the chapel. Beautiful.

If you enjoy dance, you might like the American Dance Festival. It's taking place on the Duke campus throughout the month of June.

If you have a night to yourselves, you might like to check out Magnolia Grill. Gourmet Magazine rated it one of the very best restaurants in the country last year (#11 on their list). Make reservations!!!

1002 Ninth Street, Durham

And you should check out what's going on in downtown Durham at the American Tobacco Historic District

To see what else is happening in the Triangle, check out The Indy - our local free press entertainment mag. It's available for free all over the area.
