I would stay away from Wake County. If we had to do it all over again, we'd move to Chapel Hill ... at least you know what you're getting into and the schools are better.
We are very glad that we chose Johnston County!!! Once our girls are out of school we may choose differently, but we came here for the schools in particular and have been extremely pleased.
We moved here to the triangle area when my husband got a job at NC State. We lived in Wake County initially but moved to Johnston County a few weeks ago. My son just had his first day of school here and absolutely loved it. He rides to school on a neighborhood school bus with lots of other kids and goes to a school right less than a mile away. We were able to purchase a much larger home here on a 1 acre lot that backs up to miles of marsh. We love it here! Country feel in an area that is growing quickly.
Would you consider Cary? Park Village is a neighborhood in a great location, in your price range, and many of the families I know there have gone to Davis Drive schools (traditional calendar) forever... well regarded schools...
Caveat: PV has about 800 homes, about half are assigned to another school (Salem) which is year-round. However, I have heard wonderful things about that school too.
I think the latest Wake County improvement was that they are giving us three year assignments at a time, so you can plan for more than one year at once.
I personally have had wonderful experiences with Wake County schools, but I only have two young kids currently in the system, and they both go to a magnet.
