If your intention is to live in Raleigh, I'd check out apartments on Creedmoor Rd (hwy-50) before considering Brier Creek and certainly Cary. 50 is pretty much a straight shot north for the commute and should be okay for someone commuting at 4:15-4:30 in the afternoon. There are plenty of apartment choices between Crabtree Valley and I-540 on Creedmoor Road. However, I don't know anything about them.
I'd avoid Cary because you'd have to travel through RTP or more of Raleigh at the beginning of rush hour in order to get to work in Butner. It's just going to be more of a pain than if you were to start in north Raleigh. You can also look at northern Durham, which will put you even closer to Butner. I am not sure if you are considering Durham or not. Another option would be Wake Forest if you are interested in a more sububan option than either Raleigh or Durham. Good luck!
