Winter Tire Cables in Triangle Walmarts? (buy, store, garage)

I was told to get these from Walmart, but the employees don't know what I'm talking about and I can't find them anywhere. Has anyone seen these at Walmart? I'm going snowboarding in WV this weekend and would like the added piece of mind of the cables.

Do you mean tire chains? Try an auto supply place, or KMart.

No, he probably means cables. Traction cables are generally used in conditions like we experienced last weekend. Chains would be too aggressive for such snow conditions except for last Saturday. Try Sears at Crabtree mall. Also try 4 Wheel Parts.

Wow, thanks! I learned something new! I didn't realize these things were an option. I've only ever seen chains.

Our mailman had those on his truck last week Saturday during the snow. First time I'd seen them. (Interestingly, he only had them on his outside wheels - not the ones toward the curb.)

I'd like them before this weekend so I can take them on the trip, but my car is AWD so I'll just have to take it slow if I can't find them before then.

if WalMart does not have them (they would be in the automotive department near the service counter if yours has a Tire & Lube Express), try the auto parts store (Autozone, Advanced, etc)

a word of advice from someone who sold them for years: after you buy them but before you go on your trip, practice putting them on once or twice in your driveway at home. the last thing you want is to be trying to figure it all out in the freezing cold and wet on the side of the road (and possibly in the dark)

That's what I was planning on doing after I saw all the truckers on the roadside stopped to put chains on in the freezing cold.

Yea, practice in your garage or you might get caught by NRG and have your picture on city-data !
I've done this a few times too ... its quite the Keystone Kops routine at first.

Lots of variables in the decision, but IMHO there are lots of pluses in having a set of real snow tires mounted on a cheap set of steel wheels. They will last many, many years if you only use them in bad weather.

Oh I agree, and when I get my new set of wheels/tires I'm going to mount snow tires on the stock wheels so I can just switch them out when I hit the slopes.
