I was wondering specifically about neighborhoods within the different cities as well the descriptions of the cities themselves. I was looking in MacGregor Downs in Cary but I think the HOA's may be a bit more restrictive than I am use to (gathering from the posts).

People like to overstate the HOA situation. It varies by community, but I doubt it is more restrictive than you are used to seeing.
Considering where you are coming from, you would probably like MacGregor Downs. It has a similar look and feel to the area you are in. You might also want to look at Meadowmont in Chapel Hill, particularly if you are interested in building a new home.
