I am one of few recently tasked with studying the MLS Alliance. Gather feedback and report back to our local association. I am asking those of you who are members of an association that belong to an MLS Alliance for your opinions. Likes-Dislikes, Pros-Cons, thoughts good or bad. All opinions are welcome. I am especially interested in those who belong to very small associations. Some questions I keep getting are :"Why would we want someone else coming in to our area and selling our properties when they know nothing about our area? Our association is small but we still have too many so why invite more? I think everyone looks to the negative and I understand that in times like these but I also can see some of the positive and need your help.

I think that the localized MLS systems are ludicrous, especially their insistance of protecting their turf.
In my opinion, the MLS system should be nation wide with a nominal fee, and that fee should be used to ensure that listings and subsequent sales information in entered into the system properly.
As an appraiser, who pays the same dues for the privilege of using MLS systems as realtors do, it is extremely frustrating to find MLS sheets with half information or wrong data. Not to mention the silly games some realtors play by tinkering with some data after the sale.
And the good old boy MLS network sits back does nothing. Other than organizing lunches and holding CE classes to teach realtors how to increase their income (and yes, I have been in the class -- this is not second hand information) is not exactly impressive nor productive.
Los Angeles has the largest alliance in the US. There has even been talk of a statewide system. The agents, appraisers, buyers, and sellers, all love it. The problem is the turf wars over the software systems. Boards have invested a lot of money in software or they have developed a system and want everyone else to buy it. The problem isn't over control of the data, it's about money and who is going to make more of it from merging boards.

Agreed. Mid-Florida MLS is rockin! I think we have about 12 boards and as many counties. Our local board had a system, but they didn't have the overhead or expertise to maintain it. Our current system is MLXChange from MarketLinx.
Agents in California can't wait for a statewide system. If it wasn't for the politics over who's database system they are going to use, it would have been done years ago. Agents didn't see it as others invading their territory, they see it as a way to improve service to clients.
i think it is terrible. we have it, but lost 2 cities right in the area. its an even bigger problem now.
but before when all was well, properties were x-compatible. i could see some of the current listings on other MLS's, i could never see any of the closed sales or just a small amount of them.
it only takes 1 company to ruin the credibility and reliability of the MLS.
i am now just switching boards, because i cant stand dealing with the fort myers Rasputin mls crap. the florida association of realtors has already implemented a FREE state wide MLS system, but local boards like fort myers/cape coral still arent join it.
if can be a great thing, if the MLS company isnt greeding in sharing the information.
