The only plus with a gas range is you can light your ciggie on it. The big negative is that the pots around the burners are impossible to clean (overflowed rice or barley is the worst). My smooth top looks brand new after 7 years, and my Calrod has replaceable pots - $10 a set, which I save for the day I ever decide to sell the place. Both boil water just as fast as my gas stove did - but much tidier.
