I've looked at some of those people finding sites but they only list town(s) and relatives. I don't want to pay for searches if the info I need is rather general. Surely there must be public records that are free.
Otherwise, how to find out who owns a house? If it was kept by one person in a divorce or sold off totally.

If you know where the couple was divorced (at least the state and county), and the names of one of the parties AND the approximate time you believe they were divorced, you can go to the website for the county clerk and do a search in either court records or civil records.
Not all counties publish all the records for the public to view, especially for free. It's really hit or miss.
Just go on Google or Bing and ask "X COUNTY PROPERTY RECORDS."
County tax assessors usually have a website where the info is available online. It can be searched by the address or the name or the property description.
Finding the owner of a house is easy enough, plently of websites to tell you how.
On the other hand, if what you really want to know is the contents of a divorce settlement, I doubt you'll have any luck. These are kept private, and rightly so. If you are not directly concerned (a heir or similar), it is none of your business really.
Why are so interested anyway and why is this question in "Relationships"?
Are you involved with one of the divorcees?

If you have questions about someone whom you are dating, ask what you want to know. I can understand you wanting proof that the person is divorced. Who owns the house is none of your business.

I can obtain a Property Profile for you if you DM me the address.
In Missouri, we have a thing called Missouri Courts, Case.net. If you know who you're looking for, you can put their name in, and it'll show every time that person has been in the court system, both civil and criminal.

If there has been a transfer of ownership--whether it's by a divorce or otherwise--you will usually be able to find the recorded deed in the County office that handles the recording of deeds. Oftentimes, those records can be found online.
