OMG, no one uses the garage" is nowhere on that least. I seriously cannot comprehend, even after reading some replies that sort of agree, why this is REALLY an issue for people. I live in a neighborhood with $400,000 - $600,000 McMansions. We have those people who have 5 cars in the driveway and one on the street. We have homes where you can't even tell if people live there because you never see cars in the driveway or street. I see some neighbors CANNOT use the garage because it's full of so much stuff...or they can only fit one car in....

Doesn't mean they are hoarders (although Stacy and Chuck I have my questions...) or bad people, or people I don't want to live around. It certainly had zero affect on our decision to buy. I certainly wouldn't lose sleep over it because even if one person, or 3 don't want to buy because of this...someone doesn't care and you will sell it.

When buying a place in 2011, the number one reason we ruled out one high-end tract built community was so many people not using the garage and parking on the street. Very nice looking houses, seemingly well built... but the entire development just looked trashy with cars everywhere.

Most of the attached garages built now days are not big enough to house a SUV or Pickup truck.

The whole “cars aren’t in the garage and/or street parked” thing is purely a taste and aesthetic choice. I don’t understand why some people despise it so badly, but I’m sure they can’t comprehend why I do t really care and don’t find it to be my business.

I’m a little irked that some would compare an Escalade street parked to cars sitting on the lawn with tall grass under it, though. There’s a wee bit of difference between something Jeff Foxworthy would have made a joke about and normal people doing normal things like street parking.

Not putting things away in their proper places is troubling to some people. I’m one of those people. I don’t keep my trash cans in view either, although few seem to care about that either.

Kinda the norm where i live. Lots of homes here have multiple drivers. So not unusual to see more than 1 car in the driveway. Unless it's a POS on cinder blocks, it doesn't bother me.

I have 3 cars, and my wife has one. We have a 2 car garage so 2 need to be in the driveway no matter what, and usually it's the two most frequently driven.

A lot of new build homes are going up with 3-4 car garages. A lot of old stock still remains with zero or a single car garage. Parking in the driveway is just the norm here short of upscale communities. I live where there are $1mil+ homes and still see cars parked in the driveway. They certainly are nice cars, but nonetheless they sit outside. Doesn't bother me a bit.

But the fact they are two large SUV's is probably why they don't park in the garage. Garages don't seem to be built to fit one never mind two big SUV's. The street parking would annoy me but not the driveway. It is a trade off, killer view or parking. It is up to you really. You say they lived there 10 years and it is a 55+ community? How old are they? Perhaps they won't be around or one will stop driving in a few years and they'll only have one vehicle.

My home has a really good view, but DH and I are always looking for homes with even better views. We like buying and updating houses, and then selling after a few years.

There’s a house that is a new listing that has caught our attention. It needs serious updating and landscaping, as well as the house needs painting. While it is quite expensive for the work needed, we are considering it because we could probably sell our house for close to or more than the asking price of this property. It has the drop dead view we are seeking.

One thing, however, is that the nextdoor neighbor has two giant SUVs they park in their driveway, and also often on the street ~ curbsides on both sides of their driveway. These houses are close together. There is an HOA, but no rules about parking in garages, and the streets are public. I’m concerned that we’ll have trouble selling the house in the future if the same neighbors are there….they have lived there about 10 years. I think they are Uber drivers.

So, I’m wondering how people feel about having neighbors who don’t use their garages when the homes are quite close to eachother.
That would be a problem for me, as a potential buyer. In the driveway is one thing (large SUVs don't fit in all garages), but curbside is tacky, and can be dangerous.

OP is the kind of people that make me glad I will never buy in an HOA lol

How about mind your business?

I lived in a house that had a functioning garage and we always parked in the driveway. Now, to be fair, we didn't have a basement so we used our garage for storage.

Again, none of your business. Your neighbour does not exist to boost your resale profits.

Our house is small and the attic is unusable, so the garage is where all of the stuff goes.

An old place I rented... that was exactly how our garage was. It had a pool table, a couch, our gardening, fishing, sports stuff. It was nice. Cars stayed on the driveway.

My current place has a broken down garage that our slumlords have not fixed yet despite citations from the city... I wonder if OP would prefer THAT instead lol

I think I have a neighbor that hates cars parking in the street. One morning 19 people woke up and found all of their car windows smashed.

I have lived where there is no parking on the street. Everyone survived. No one died.

Maybe people should buy houses that fit their needs. I understand that things change but if you already have 3 cars maybe buy a place with a three or four car garage.

One HOA I'm aware of has " the part of the garage designed for parking a 4-wheel motorized shall not be used for storage or a work area." I agree with that.
