What are the best Apples to use for making the best Apple Pie's?
I think I have used a combination of Granny Smith, Braeburn and Gala in the past and they came out really delish.

Thanks

My initial smart alack response would have been free ones as that is what we used most over the year for both apple pie AND apple sauce.

Generally, my favorites are Winesap, Jonathan, McIntosh, and Golden delicious. Granny Smiths are fine if you can find them locally. Too many of them are currently imported from New Zealand and Chile and tend to be worst for the trip.

Honestly, you would do better to go to the local orchard and talk to the locals and see what they like. Remember, there are literally HUNDREDS of different varieties in most parts of the US, many of which are NOT well known nationally.

Since you are in the state of Arizona, I would recommend the orchards around Willcox, AZ. My favorite was Stoudt's Cider Mill as they had some of the finest apple cinnamon pie I have ever had. However, they closed in 2011.

There are a dozen other orchards in the Willcox area.

I asked hubby what he thought, he instantly said Jonathan. I suppose to each his/her own liking though. Whatever flavor one likes to taste.

Free is always best. The second best is local.

I like Northern Spy ("Spys for pies"), Winesap or Jonathan.

For pies, I like to use one of the more tart varieties, and I much prefer the firm-fleshed types to the softer ones. I've used Granny Smiths in the past, but now I generally get my apples from the vendors at our local Farmers' Market, and I just ask them which are the tartest and firmest varieties available. The type I come home with depends on what happens to be on offer at the time.

Me too, I can't hardly imagine any others, but I have used Jonathans and I can understand Winesaps, as they are similar to Jonathan. Any others stand a possibility of being either to sweet or pithy..(maybe that is pethy?

I've always used Granny Smith. That's the best, imo.
