I checked 2 grocery stores -- Ingles and Kroger. No cane syrup. How do you think it would be with white Karo?
So I was looking online for Steen’s cane syrup. $34.99 for a 16oz bottle on Amazon!
I think you could easily do a simple syrup with sugar and water as a substitute but I don’t know what the ratios would be. Corn syrup would probably be okay.
I made the Syrup cake using the recipe above except that I used real maple syrup. It was quite excellent.
Good to know! Can I ask - did you put the full amount of clove in the batter and was it okay?
Maple is a great ingredient to use this time of year. Made a maple brown butter bourbon pecan pie for thanksgiving, and let me just say... it was amazing.

One of the advantages of living in south Louisiana. That is a ridiculous price. Grew up putting that on pancakes or using for dipping biscuits. The best way to describe the taste is almost like a diluted molasses flavor. In the cake it’s a hint of the syrup’s flavor and not nearly as sweet as I imagined. I would consider using natural maple syrup but they are very expensive here when not using the imitation maple syrup.

Ah, okay, that was definitely not what I was picturing cane syrup to be. I wonder if golden syrup might be an acceptable replacement then since it’s similar to what you’re describing.
I am checking out a few other places online and finding it for much cheaper. Don’t know why Amazon is charging $34.99. Might order some just because I’m intrigued by it.

That price is close to what Steens is offering on their website for packs of syrup.
