There was a delicious cheese dip recipe in the 1970s-80s made in a hollowed out round rye bread. You ripped out the chunk of bread and used them to scoop the dip.

I guess there is no more Nippy Cheese in a tube, so I wonder what would be a good substitute. Old English? Cheez Wiz? Other?

Here's our top shelf of spreadable cheeses in southern MN. It's got a nice "bite" to it. Whenever I get a hankering I try to hide it in the bowels of the refrigerator or someone will eat the whole thing at one sitting.

Don't know if it's "cheese" like the nippy cheese or if it's cheese. LOL. It's much more like cheese than Cheez Whiz. Regardless, it's tasty and would be suitable for a dip.

I haven’t tried making the dip with any substitute yet. The consistency of Nippy Cheese was a lot looser than a bar cheese spread. I might try Old English in the jar.

The ones in in my post are soft pack in a container. They taste less like preservatives than the Old English, I think. But if you're looking for that 70's flavor, at least Old English is still around.

Think I lost a post.

I remember the Nippy. We liked it. It was very soft and smooth.

The ones I posted are in a container and are spreadable so at room temp they are soft. They are more cheddary, though, with that grainy mouth feel.

I actually saw that in a store today. It was $5. for a little tub. So, I’d be looking at $20. for that part of the recipe. I never have an occasion anymore, but if I do, I’ll probably make up something else to fill the rye bread,

Yeah. That's why, when I want some, I hide it.

It was always expensive but that's a spectacular price for mixing in a cheese dip. I'm sure something that costs less would work just as well mixed in with all the other ingredients.

I was wondering if you were doing something special. Remember reading about your party with the shrimp appetizers in little glasses.
