Thanks for all the great receipes. There was no receipe or instructions on the package and could not find a good receipe to save my soul. All these receipes sound terrific and seem easier than I thought it would be. I can't wait to try them.

My peas never got soft enough when I made a different recipe in my crock pot and I cooked it for almost 8 hours. Are you supposed to soak split peas--like beans-- before you put them in the soup?

I've heard that adding salt to the water keeps beans from softening, so maybe that is why. Don't add salt until the end.

I've never soaked split pease. Also do not add salt til peas are soft and fon't cover while cooking.

I saute' celery, onions, carrots, garlic in a little olive oil. Add a bay leaf or two, a smoked ham hock. Then add your split peas, cover w/water and add a dash-little dash of liquid smoke. Bring just to a boil and the simmer uncovered for 2 hrs.

AKgirl, when I make my split pea soup I cover the peas completely with chicken broth, bring to a boil cover and let rest off the heat for 1 hr. add more c. broth as needed as the peas start to swell. Add all of the ingredients, ham bone, ham, celery, carrots, bay leaf, pepper and simmer 2 more hrs. If you are going to use the crockpot follow my first sentence before putting everything in the crockpot. If I do not have ham or bone, I season the soup with Sazon pork seasoning packet. Between the seasonings and c.broth you will not need salt.

On another note, if you are using small, split, French lentils, they definitely require longer cooking. French lentils I find, are much better used as a side dish. Hope this helps. kelsie

Thanks Kelsie! I will def. do this next time using the crock pot instructions you provided...it was frustrating not having the split peas soft after 8 hours of cooking!!

Thanks again

My dear departed mother used to make it in the pressure cooker with a big old ham bone it.

Wish I still had the recipe. Loved that stuff.

Hi everyone
I finally got around to making the pea soup following one of these great receipes and WOW was it ever good. I ate until I was very nearly comatose!! I am going to make some more soon. I don't know why but I had a hankering for this soup and it really hit the spot. Thanks to everyone for the help and receipes. Wish I could have shared some with y'all.

Just had some from the freezer the other night and it only gets better with age!! Pure comfort. Especially with garliky croutons.
