What is it? I certainly hope it is not finding love and being with someone. I already had that and lost it. There has to be something more important than that. Right?
Different things for different people. For some, love and being with someone is what gives their life meaning. There is nothing wrong with that, just like there is nothing wrong with finding meaning in other aspects of life. If I HAD to generalize, I would say the most important thing is to avoid living your life in a way calculated solely to please or to annoy people.

A few others have already mentioned this, but I think it might not be the most important thing, but surely very high, at least for me, is an inner peace or contentment. Moments when I'm not bogged down by my minds constant and useless thoughts. Most of the time the things we constantly twirl around in our minds are truly not productive, at least for the given moment we are in.
Being still and not thinking, is very important, gives us peace, and when we have peace and security, we can give more of our self's to others. This can manifest in many ways, but it does manifest its self.

I think for everyone it is different. I cant place one thing, I think love is very important but not just love with a S/O love with family and friends is important too. Also making a difference in the world and helping people and not just doing things for yourself.

My first thoughts to this question go directly towards my immediate family. My family mean the world to me and this includes everyone from my son, to my sisters. I don`t think I could possibly narrow it down to just "one thing" but my marriage is on the top, as well as my son!
I listen to alot of my patients stories throughout my work day, and it makes me appreciate the little things in life, ya` know?

I think it was Epicurus..however it's spelt...who said something along the lines of needing a few good friends, food and shelter as basic neccessities, and anything after that should come from within. His point was personal contentment shouldn't hang on outside influences. It's always easier said than done though.
Your measure of what happiness is can only ever be your own. That gives you the power to change it somehow if you're not content - but be gentle with yourself.
