Yeah, I don't know what I want to do either, my job, while it is not all that fulfilling, I do have a certain level of job security and I feel confident that I could go to any major metro area and be able so secure work in my industry, since I've been in it about 20 yrs now.
If I had to do it over, I'd have done something else. I suppose I could change careers, it just gets harder as you get older... I think for many reasons.
I know taking a major pay cut would hurt pretty good.

My wages really can't get any lower; I'm making less now than I was in my 20's. But you're right Chow it does get harder to change careers, I don't relish the thought of starting over and at my age employers probably don't want to make the investment.
If I knew then what I know now I definitely would have altered my career course.
Oy, if I were to tell you all the times I tried ... I was like Ralph Cramden, always coming up with the next great scheme. In fact, for the longest time I was a "business opportunity" junkie - I'd compulsively check Entrepreneur magazine, etc. for the latest miracles.
Yeah, I fell down a LOT of times - but when it finally all gelled for me it was sweet beyond comprehension, and more than made up for all the prior falls.
As for what to do ... yeah, sometimes that's the hardest part. The only thing I could recommend is to take a personal inventory and think about what you enjoy, what you're good at, what you could envision yourself doing for the next 30 or 40 years. Read the magazines / websites like I did - a lot of it is garbage, much of it is pie-in-the-sky, but every once in a while you can glean an idea or two from their articles.

I quit counting the times I said "that's a ridiculous idea" or "that place will never survive" only to be wrong.
No matter how teched-out a camera is, it doesn't know how to perform a 3-light set-up; it doesn't understand about the Rule of Thirds; it doesn't know about composition, perspective, light and shade, or any of the other thousands of little things that a pro knows.
It's only a tool.

I don't know...I'm pretty happy in my line of work, and the pay is great. Now when I retire...that will be when I will step down to something less mentally challenging.
