But you have to have a way to prove that you have it, Tex. A photo of yourself in front of your house/yacht/sports car is probably the best manner for doing so.

And to answer the OP, I'd say yes. It's almost a catch-22. Most attractive people don't need online dating. The few that do use it get all the attention. Every other average joe is left in the dust, much like in real life. An outright scam if you happen to use a paid site.

e: before a bunch of people tell me that it worked for them, there are also people who smoke a pack a day and never get so much as a cough, doesn't make it the rule though

People like different things. Some wounded souls and insecure ones might be looking for somebody NICE rather than attractive. So there is always hope.

There are plenty of women who see a picture of a guy with his car and roll their eyes and click "next." It's up there with the "Self-Portrait: Shirtless in Bathroom Mirror" shots. Also, the guy who takes this approach can't complain later about only attracting golddiggers if he's dangling his expensive toys as bait.

Well I have no such photos and I haven't gotten a single bite. Perhaps all the women my age in DC are materialistic and vapid?

OP, maybe it's your attitude that stops you from getting dates. This woe is me conception won't get you anywhere.

yes, looks are important in dating, but are not everything.

Do you have to be very attractive to use online dating?
Not at all! That's the beauty of online dating. Even if you look like Sloth from The Goonies.

What if your house is underwater? Debt on Yacht and on a sports car?

A well educated women on finance will know.

What about shy attractive guys? What about guys who are afraid of rejection?

Its not a scam because that average Joe accepted their terms to get on the site.

I get about 5ish new e-mails/day. I never send out first e-mails. But my issue has never been looks, it's an ADD personality.
