If the guy is foreign, maybe he doesn't know our tipping system or maybe the guy doesn't go out to restaurants much and doesn't have a clue of what to do.
.
He's in his 30s and American so he should know how to handle a bill by now, but I agree with you that I should've brought this up at the time or just snatched my money back when it became apparent that he didn't want his change. I personally am NOT ok with the server pocketing an $11 tip which I could've just kept in my purse. I could go to Subway and buy lunch with that extra $6!
As for me, I would not have put out any money at all, until a man asked me for money, then I would have asked how much. When a man asks you to pay for half the date, he is not interested in another date. When a man asks you for nothing, he will probably call you again. Try it, it works.
You’re right, it can go that way or it might work different for other guys where if the woman doesn’t contribute at all, she’s not interested in another date. If a woman shoes that she’s fine about not following gender specific traditions, she might be laid back with other areas of the relationship. These either works or not depending on the guy/girl expectation, what they prefer, what they are used to, culture, and so on.

When I go on a date, I plan on footing the bill. It's just the way it is. Unless she was an exceptionally bad date and I want to send the message to her that I have no desire to meet up with her again. I'll pay for a lady, not for a beeyotch!
