Or is something else needed (assuming fairly equal commitment to the relationship). Discuss please.

Trust.

Hey, somebody can be an amazing conversationalist. That same person could scorch the sheets with you. But if you cannot trust that person, then he or she is a total bust in terms of a LTR.

Not always.

There's a difference between best friend and FWB and a real relationship.

In long term relationships, our best friend is our SO and lover. What you have is a good foundation to build a fantastic relationship.

Is that what you want ? If not, you risk screwing up a great friendship if it's only about getting laid.

It does sound like a good foundation and I believe part of your answer is in the parenthesis....commitment, and compatibility is important also.

This certainly CAN be the basis of a great relationship, but it may not be enough. I have some great women friends I simply couldn't live with - no matter how great the sex might be. You need the day-to-day compatibility to live together harmoniously. I also think that a great relationship also has a certain chemistry (at least for the first few years, then it can fade into something more enduring) and romance. Without those, I don't think the relationship will be truly satisfying.

It takes more than just those two things (i.e. commitment, trust, compromise, etc.) but those two types of attractions have to be present to have a foundation for it to work, in my experience. I've been with women I loved on a platonic level without the strong sexual attraction, and women I wanted to constantly have sex with but who were no fun to have conversations with. When I find both in the same person, it's game on.

Relationships are not math equations - there are no hard and fast right and wrong answers.

Sorry, but no. Went through this with a coworker of mine. Had pretty good sex and she was easy enough to talk too. Problem was there was not enough spark emotionally for anything to develop. I've had absolutely no experience with best friend and great lover. The few really good female friends I have had, put me in the friendzone.
