I see so many people in my age group (20's) getting promise rings from their boyfriends and they brag about it. I think its nothing to brag about. Its like the guy is saying I want to marry you but I don't want to...stupid. I thought the original purpose was for those who are too young to get married to have these rings so as to "promise" that they will get married when they are able to.
Really? still? I always thought that fad died out. I haven't seen anyone around my age get one.
If my sweetie bought me a ring as a present I'd be thankful. I love him and I'd appreciate the demonstration of his affection for me. But a "promise ring" doesn't carry any weight in my heart and so I wouldn't take it to mean anything.
well to answer your question i don't know anyone who has gotten a promise ring.
I know like 5 people who have! its crazy! and naturally, they all live with their SO's. Go figure. Anyone still want to challenge the shacking up idea? cause I'm vehemently against half arse and lazy commitments like that. The "promise" ring is the icing on the cake to that lol.
To demonstrate , usually to the lady, that the relationship is progressing on a path to marriage. I had one, found it recently and have been wearing it.

Wow, I had one when I was 17 - it's still in my jewelry box somewhere around here
I had no idea that guys still gave them to their girlfriends!
While it does seem more like a teen thing, I'd say that every couple is entitled to have whatever kind of "promises" they want between the two of them and if they want to let a piece of jewelry signify their intent that's fine with me.
