Things have come so far since Meg Ryan falling in love with Tom Hanks over AOL was considered a novel enough concept to make a film about it. Now more than a third of marriages in the US start out online, according to a survey of 19,000 people who married between 2005 and 2012. Of those who hooked up virtually before physically, 45% met through dating sites, while others met through chat sites, forums, and social media, reports USA Today.
Two of my cousins married guys they met online. And they are both extremely attractive, well educated, and sincere women. It's the only reason I felt comfortable putting up an online profile...I never would have imagined either of them would use online dating, but it worked really well for them.

So it just goes to show that there are quality women online. It also goes to show that even quality, highly attractive women don't have guys lined up to date them daily, and don't have a "gazillion options", at least not IRL.
For me and other guys like me, online dating really helps eliminate the guessing and time wasting game of meeting woman who don't pass certain deal breakers which for me are wanting kids, smoking, excessive tattoo's and drug usage. Being able to just see women that pass those criteria really helps me see who are worthy dating potential and not having to go through the long and upsetting process of finding these things out the hard way when meeting women.
I have an Australian friend who met her husband online and moved to Tennessee to be with him. No friends or anything like that. Just picked up and moved.
I've read the article and it also sounds like a paid ad. 35% of what.... 2+ million marriages in USA? That means about 700,000 marriages started on dating sites... WRONG. It's possible that a few hundreds of thousands sought first meeting/chat via facebook or some other online sites, not just dating sites. It is probably true for a big portion of the remote relationships with U.S. citizens and foreign citizens though.
I might try out the dating sites one day, but I'd rather use some local version for my native country, not a global network.

Not surprised AT ALL! FYI, THIS IS YOUR FUTURE! Oh and may I add, I am 1 of the stats. I met my husband online. I already said it that before, people would think you ARE a freak if you say you met your SO online but it really is turning out to be a norm now. But I honestly still feel embarrassed to say I met my husband online, when people we know ask, LOL. But it is what it is.
