Yeah, he's miserable and lonely and looking around for all the things he's not getting a home sounds like. Companionship, understanding, sex, etc. You were auditioning for the priviledge of giving him all of that it seems like (even if you didn't know), but it turns out you were only to give him some of it some of it so he's moving on, trying to fill the missing pieces. Now you are one of his "trusted friends" and he wants to hang out with you. He probably considers you close.
On the other hand, his wife might think you are other things. And if she starts talking, who knows what she'll say about you. You say she was never exactly friendly to you. I say run while you can. Heh.
