I was recently married and I have decided to hyphenate my last name. I want to only use my husbands last name for almost everything and simply have my hyphanated name on my social security card and id. I'd like to ask you hyphenated ladies out there living in the city on what can you use your Husbands last name for? Do I have to use both names on everything or can I use my husbands last name?

I had planned on having the hyphenated name for a bout a year and then go to court to change it to his last name. It would only cost me $65 in fees but I would have to change everything again which I don't really mind. Any information would help.

Just go ahead and use his last name.

Whatever your name is on your Social Security card is what the federal gov't will know you as FOREVER. And if it is in any way different on other documents, it could make things like applying for a loan, etc. harder.

Don't make things that much more difficult.

The women in my family don't normally take the husbands last name and just hyphenate, I feel like my maiden name is a part of my identity and I wanted to keep it with me for atleast a little longer.

How will you determine how long is "a little longer"?

You are you regardless of what your name is.

It's not really something you can hedge your bets on.

I'm thinking about a year. Can my drivers licence have my husbands last name and my social security card have my hyphenated last name?

Why aren't you asking the women in your family? If it's a tradition, they should know.

I don't get the hyphen. Change it or not, but what's with the wishy washy bit?

Pick one(your husband's name or the hyphenated) and stick with it.

Or keep yours. You will save yourself much aggravation and money later.
Trust me.

Not sure...you may have to check with the SSA and/or your state's DMV.

Something else to consider: in my state, when you register to vote your name and birthdate are checked against the SSA and DMV databases. If these don't match, it can cause a problem. Just a heads up in the event that your state has the same procedure.

I know that many young women these days simply use their maiden name as their middle name, after they marry (no hyphen). Would that work for you?

Are you talking about a scenario where your last name is hyphenated but your husband's is not? That makes no sense. The whole point of is that you and your hubby (and your future kids) have the same (hyphenated) last name.

I will double check with the DMV, I would like my license to have my husbands name at least. Unfortunately my hubby LOVES my middle name so I don't think that'll work. Thanks for the idea though!
