Come on...you have to admit, my PMS comment was funny (though I guess you wouldn't get the joke if you didn't realize I live with mostly men).
As for the whole "beat the tar out of them"....it's an expression. I tell my kids I'm going.to beat their ass....which really means "you will be grounded if the behavior continues".

With a beating like that you may just have a death on your hands.
What is described here is assault on a human being. Kids sometimes do stupid things as they are not mature enough at times to know right from wrong. In this case a stern lecture will go far better in educating the child and is more civilized.
I'm sure it was just meant as just an expression, at least that's how I took it.
