Something I happened to notice when she would always keep her handbag on her side between us when walking. I always as a Gentleman would have myself towards the curb. (call me old fashioned if you wish as I was raised from the OLD school).
Now we cross the street and thus I'm at the other side to the curb and she then moved her handbag to the other shoulder again between us. Now I took this as a sign that are our possible relationship would be a bit on the questionable side.
Have noticed this with other girls/women also until later on did find a girl/young woman that did not do the above and I felt closer to her to the point of being able to hold her hand while walking thus a feeling of closeness and harmony.
My question is do some now days see or feel what I went thru those past times...do understand things change over the years.
There are many things in life that are never noticed or stick in the back of our minds thus are overlooked.
Are there some out there who have had these things happen to them or am I just an exception to the norm?
Some gals move their bag others leave it on the same shoulder and I don't think it means anything but some gals have the habit of moving their bag.
Personally when I carry a bag it is on my left shoulder or if I have a handbag it is in my left hand.
One more thing, a bag between two people is much harder to grab and steal than a bag on the outside of one person.
I always carry my purse on my right shoulder and across my body like this )/(. But I wouldn't read to much into it too. Maybe she thought her purse was "safer" between two people where someone couldn't grab it and easily run away?

It is more comfortable to carry a bag (shoulder or hand) by alternating sides. One body part gets tired or sore, and you switch to the other.
Or she may have the impression that you will not respect her timing, where intimacy is concerned, unless there is a physical barrier.
Do you often attribute significance to patterns or signs that is not real? Do you have a tendency to negotiate physical intimacy nonverbally, instead of asking what someone is comfortable with? Or push limits?

I think you're over-thinking this. How big is her bag that when it's between the two of you, you feel you can't hold her hand or be close to her?
Like CSD said, some women switch from shoulder to shoulder. I'm right handed so I keep my bag or even if I'm holding a clutch on the left that way my right hand/arm is always free and I find it easier to reach into my bag with my right hand.
Hey, that's my waist and my purse strap going across it! lol
