I've heard it in real life plenty from mostly my female friends. They politely decline and the dude keeps sniffing around and won't let up. It's like they have no social communication skills/listening ability at all and/or no respect for the other person. They have to be figuratively whacked upside the head to understand that the person isn't interested.
What do you attribute this to? Is it the new technology age with cell phones and everyone isolating themselves from each other, or lack of it by their parents with their upbringing, or...?

I don't know, its probably a very complex question, but I would off hand guess it is a combination of smaller families (people having fewer or no siblings that they need to interact with) and less live/in person group play growing up. So many kids I see sit inside and just play video game sports, never really get out there. Even when video games existed when I was young (Atari, etc) that was never allowed. We were outside after school, all summer, interacting with other kids non stop and having to talk, listen, negotiate with people of both genders as we played. Even though society is safer now than it was in the 70s and early 80s by all statistics, due to the 24 hr news cycle and pervasive coverage people feel it is more dangerous. They just don't send their kids outside unsupervised for 5 hrs+ at a time and say get home for dinner.

I'm sure there are other reasons too. It's another topic, and while I'm pro porn in general, I don't think the ready availability of porn, esp hardcore porn, to young teens/teens really helps our socializing either. In fact, I think it hurts it a great deal. But that is another entire topic.

Setting one's first response to deal with the lowest common denominator and dense guys, however, does penalize the guys that are considerate and would accept the first answer. It is best to give people the benefit of the doubt the first time. She can be clear about her disinterest and polite at the same time. If a few don't get the message, she may have to do it a second time.

It won't be the end of the world if she has to reject someone a second time. Yes, the second time she should be stern, blunt and leave no doubt, but I don't believe it should be done that way the first time because that penalizes the considerate guys.

Plus it is easy, rightly or wrongly, to get a reputation as being the "b-word" if they are rude right from the start. In other words, there can be repercussions and some people may decide not to be their close friends and keep them at arms length instead. This could mean they are not invited to birthday parties, backyard BBQ's, etc. Not very good advice IMO. We agree to disagree.

If a man over 55 is hitting on me or trying to woo me with his social security check, it is creepy!
Is that what they're doing, how lame. When I get that age I'm going go all out and have em falling in my arms, "I'll let you ride on my scooter". Done deal.

Yes, older men who hit on younger women are creepers, perverts, disgusting, etc. Yet older women who go for much younger guys are celebrated. Don't believe me? There are TONS of websites for "cougars". How many websites do you see for the reverse (older men and younger women)? ***crickets chirping***

Well, that's you're opinion and you're entitled to it. However, the point I was trying to make was that there is a clear double-standard here. Cougars are celebrated while older men who go for younger women are just disgusting creeps (at least by societies standards).

Oh, no doubt there's a double standard. But I could point about 20 other double standards. Out society is filled with them. Not fair, but that's the way it goes.
