This is just casual friendly/flirting, nothing more, and it happens to me all the time. I flirt back too and don’t read anything beyond that into it either. Her job sounds very dull all day with the only break in the monotony being the various customers who stroll in that she interacts with. You being older and unavailable present an unlikelihood of anything ever happening such that you are a “safe flirt” for her. See if she flirts with other customers or treats only you “special”. It sounds though like you want this to be more than the casual flirting that it is. Just have fun with it as it beats dealing with the other clerks who don’t say anything and just ring up the order just to get you out of the way for the next customer.
OP... you are coming off as kind of silly here. Any time a woman that is really young comparing to you is flirting with you... trust me... she's not into you... she's probably just throwing you a bone or she is flirty by nature.
I'm 45 and if a 20 yr old bag girl at the grocery store gets flirty... I know she's not really into me... she's just being friendly and I'm "safe" if you know what I mean.....
Sounds like the OP may not be attracted to her because I don't know any man who doesn't like attention from an attractive women
Again, she's young enough to be my daughter! I don't mind the attraction or flirting, but if it goes too far, I'll have to cut it. There are certain types of body language in flirting; I'm no psychologist, but I consider myself a good reader of people.
Since you have are already imagining this scenario let's play the other one where you let her down easy but embarrass yourself because you get let down. This will involve her saying something to the effect of she was just flirting to get you to buy more tools.
The punchline would be, "Who's the tool now?"
OP, you should be able to steer the convo within appropriate boundaries. Just enjoy the friendly attention unless she says something brazen, which you could then reply with, "Oh my girlfriend wouldn't be okay with that."
I have gas station clerks and waitresses get flirty with me fairly often. The only kind I might hypothetically bother with, too (ages ranging from "Legal in my state" to 24). Prob could have made something happen with half a dozen in the past couple months.
And then I remember the most likely outcomes, I remember a few statistics, I remember the things that have happened to me at the hands of females, and I remember that they make somewhere around minimum wage and I'll be close to $100k this year, and they have a sixth sense for that.
So I banter a bit, get whatever I'm there for, and leave without pursuing things.
As long as YOU don't try to take things any further, the chance of her coming right out and asking you out or something are almost nonexistent.
