As I approach 40, I think the term girlfriend seems odd, although I still use it. There should be a suitable other word to use for us older people still dating.

I have tried:
"Lady Friend"
"Old Lady" <-- she hates this
"significant other" <-- sounds so generic and impersonal when used audibly
"my woman" <-- can sound demeaning I guess

Thoughts?

I'm a 46-year-old woman, and I would much rather be called a girlfriend than ANYTHING with the word "lady" in it.

A man constantly referring to his "lady" just makes me cringe for some reason.

Most other words are just too clinical (significant other), TMI (lover), or confusing (partner).

My wife started as my "friend" and then "girlfriend" to obviously "fiance" and "wife".

We are 51 and 41.

I struggled with this during my last longterm relationship of 7 years. Boyfriend did not seem to apply as we had a child together. At one point we were engaged, but as the years ticked by that we were still unmarried, fiance did not seem to apply.

I just referred to him by his first name because I never came up with anything better. Well nothing that could be used or should be used in conversation.

That seems to be how it should go in normal progression of a relationship. But what about those situations where you never progress. Hindsight with my ex, i should have referred to him as my baby daddy that is just hanging out until he is ready to fly the coop.

WTF is this older! I am 49 and don´t really feel any diffrent than when I was 30. I still live pretty much the same, it just takes a bit longer to heal when I stuff something up and injure my self... I say Girlfriend.
Off to ride my longboard now.

Why? We definitely are "older", and we use "girlfriend" and "boyfriend".

Old Lady - are you serious?

Haha, girlfriend! When I referred to my ex as boyfriend to someone, he chuckled. So it goes both ways.

Imaging she hated that! Hard to believe!!

I see no problem with "girlfriend" at 40, but use whatever labels you are comfortable with.

I like the German term "Lebensabscnittgefärten"

Lebensgefärten = Life Partner
Lebensabscnittgefärten = This section of life partner
