It doesn't matter...most women can't identify the quality of clothing on men, and the ones who can don't really care.
What DOES matter is making sure it fits properly, is free of wrinkles/stains/etc., making sure it matches, and has some semblance of style (pretty much in that order too).
I don't really care about the brands, I don't even know which brands would be considered expensive for men. I just care that he looks nice and 'put together', aka the clothes are clean and fitted and he's a sharp dresser. The clothes themselves could be from Target for all I care.
When I wear a nice suit and tie, I get so much more attention from women, and just people in general. So I say it has quite a bit of importance. Who does not want someone who looks nice?

That's looking put together. The OP was asking about wearing expensive brands. So while you'll get more attention wearing a suit than gym shorts, the difference between a $300 suit and a $3000 suit won't make much difference to women.

I think if its clean and neat, you're fine. When I moved to the Midwest I got flack when I was in my 20s because I dressed more "nice" (collared shirts, etc) when going out, and the women really preferred guys in band or brewery tshirts. Here in New England, being more put together helps, not hinders. So there are regional differences.
I get treated differently if I'm in professional work clothes than casual clothes, and it appeals to different types of people, so I think the answer is "it depends on what you're looking to attract".

That's because the women who recognize expensive suits are gold diggers and have exactly 1 thing on the mind, getting pregnant by a rich guy they can blackmail him into taking care of them...
There's a difference between looking nice and wearing expensive name brand clothes
