I just joined OKCupid and sent a message to a woman. I haven't paid. There are features you can get by paying.
The interface is pretty good, was able to enter my profile, not too many ads.
When you say POF is free to contact members - what does that mean in terms of what you can do without paying?

I find it hilarious that even Tinder expects people to pay $20 a month to be able to match with people in other locations and undo accidental swipes. Who would pay for that?

I had no luck on Tinder so to think I would pay $20 to never have someone swipe me is just crazy. lol
I thought you got at least one date from there. You weren't even on there for very long.
Just 2 matches and their phone voice sounded horrible
